Which One Are You?
Over at Pony Girl’s blog she was talking about her family and how they are all uniting under the equine umbrella. She and her family are planning a big adventure with their Ponies this summer and of course, are dressing the part of the Cowgirl. So, she mentioned that one of her cousins is picking a “Doreman Burns Cowgirl” for each in a scrapbook she’s putting together. It got me thinking, I love Doreman Burns’ watercolors of the Cowgirl. I love all the feminine yet rustic qualities and how there is a bit of mystery to go along with each girl. Then I got to thinking, which Doreman Burns cowgirl would I be if I was depicted in his paintings? I chose the one above, “South of Durango.” She looks like a good fit for me. I like the colors she’s wearing, the detail in her boots and gloves, we both have long blonde hair and we both live in the pines. She also looks like she’s a bit of a tomboy, though dressed a little feminine, she’s not too girly, not too dressed up, and looks like she’s been working outside in the dirt and dust, kinda like me. I don’t like to dress up, I like to be simple, and I like to work outside in the dirt and dust. I also like to daydream and she looks like she’s lost in a thought and enjoying the cool mountain breezes, something I enjoy too.
So, what I want to know, is which Doreman Burns cowgirl are you? If you had to choose… if you wanted to choose?

This was such a great idea! My cousin K will be so proud. I love the one you chose for yourself!! I remember seeing that one and just coveting those boots and chinks. I will check out the option to get the hat to match the print, thanks for putting in the link!! By the way, I would stick with “Letting Go” as myself, which is the one my cousin chose for me. But I really like “Double Trouble” too, except I wish she was standing with an Appy not a Paint, lol! 😉
Pony Girl has 12 pony cousins who each have a designated Doreman Burns selection. Some of the selections are just “spot on” resembling the cousin physically, right down to the hair color, complexion, and shape of the lips, and others – just fit. Mine is “Looking for Gene and Roy” and i have always loved the old western classics. Does Pony Girl know that her grampa was named after Ken Maynard? My dad and the other boys wanted to name him Ken, but the girls won and he is named after another movie star. My Doreman Burns selection shows the gal with her forearm on the neck of her horse, which is something i have always done. Each of the Pony Cousins has those kind of uncanny elements in their own Doreman Burns picture.
I didn’t see any 50-something, slightly overweight, picture taking, gardening ones so I guess I am not a cowgirl at all. I do love the artwork though. Found your lovely blog from your comment on PW’s site and am bookmarking you for return visits.

dlyn: Of course you can be a cowgirl! Like Dale Evans said, “Cowgirl is an attitude…” Dale Evans was a city girl – a Broadway star when she met Roy Rogers, fell in love, and adopted his lifestyle. He got her riding lessons, found her a safe horse that she could love, and she ended up becoming the “Queen of the West!” Our 13 Pony Cousins have not all been raised around horses. And 50 year old women? Please! 50 is the age where a woman can do anything she wants! In our Pony Cousins, we have gals who do not own a horse, but they love the adventure we have when we get together. We have three 50 year old women who have never owned their own horse, but now are taking riding lessons, buying boots, hats, and all the gear. We also have 50 year old women who have not ridden horses in some time and now have the passion return and are making adjustments in their personal lives because of the passion.
If you think that you have a cowgirl inside you, you let that spirit take you into doing things for which you have a passion. If that means that you think that you look like a Doreman Burns portrait – go for it! Get your hair colored, buy a purple bandana, or buy some boots! (try the Ariat brand – they are like slippers)
You take pictures? The Pony Cousins could have used you on Sunday. We all dressed up in our finest western: boots, hats, belts, even chinks! (chinks are leather chaps). And we posed for pictures for our scrapbook pages. Each Pony Cousin will have a scrapbook page that shows how they resemble their Doreman Burns portrait and the page will tell a little bit about the Cousin. Then we will add more pix and pages as we get together for our trail rides and Pony Cousin weekends.
So, dlyn, i say that if you have the spirit to be a cowgirl, wear it, flaunt it, and strut!

My two-year-old’s definition of a cowgirl:
“I a cowgirl, Mama. I got boots.”
Me: “Am I a cowgirl too?”
“No, you’re a mama,” shaking her head at my silliness.
I beg to differ with her (although I know how futile it is to argue with two-year-old logic). I think anyone who has had an arm up the business end of a cow qualifies.
Gosh, living in New Mexico, and actually just 5 miles from Doreman Burns until last year, I see myself in quite a few of his pictures because most of the images he portrays are truly New Mexican, my enchanted home.
At first I was going to choose: South of Durango, too. I’m kind of day-dreamy, not girly, and I live south of Durango, in the mountains surrounded by junipers and pinon pines.
But then I saw: Desert Rose, and although I’m not a red-head, I’ve often wanted to be one. And my horse is a black and white Tobiano Paint, and like that gal, I’m often fidgeting with things trying to get them to fit or work perfectly. haha!
Finally, I almost chose Sandia Sunset, because when we lived near Corrales, my view was totally of my 10,550 ft Sandia Mountains, and even when we were transferred out of state for a few years to SC, my heart and soul stayed in beautiful New Mexico and yearned to see my Sandias again.
And now I live IN the Sandia Mountains!!

But, I think I’ll stick with Desert Rose, for the reasons mentioned. (By the way, how did you add the photo to your blog without the copyright name across the photo? I’d like to add the photo, too)

What a wonderful artist and fun idea. I chose Desert Rose or even Western Trails. Love the simplicity of Desert Rose and we raise Quarter and Paint horses so love that too. Western Trails pulled me in because it looks like she’s really contemplating something.

Twinville, I just used the photo from the site and at didn’t have the copyright. I don’t know why? I think some of the pictures had the © and some didn’t. I sure didn’t remove it! Being a photographer, I know better. 😉
Hi. this is kind of an off-the-wall question , but have other visitors asked you how get the theme to look like you’ve got it?
Nope, but it’s very easy. Just go to your dashboard and go down on the left column and click appearance/themes and change it to which one you like. There’s a new one I’m going to switch to I think.
